Glass Shelves and Towel Shelves

They do two different jobs. A glass shelf is for the small things that otherwise crowd a basin: toothpaste, a candle, hand cream. It reads as light because you can see through it, which matters in a small room where a solid shelf would close the wall in. A towel shelf is deeper and stronger, made to take folded towels above the rail, and it's the one to choose if the problem is storage rather than clutter.

Where a Shelf Goes

A glass shelf belongs above or beside the basin, at a height you can reach without stretching over the bowl. A towel shelf works higher, above the door or over the towel rail, using wall that's otherwise dead. In both cases check what's behind the plaster before committing: a shelf carrying wet towels puts real load into the fixings.

Finishes

• Chrome:  the safer match for an existing bathroom and hides hard water marks better. 
• Matt black: suits a pared-back scheme and works particularly well with a glass shelf, where the bracket is the only part you see.
