What Is a Towel Ring For?

A towel ring holds one hand towel beside a basin and keeps it hanging open so it dries between uses. That's the whole job, and it's why a ring beats the alternatives at a basin: a rail takes more wall than a cloakroom usually has, and a hook leaves the towel bunched, damp and slow to dry.

Where It Goes

On the wall beside the basin, at a height where the towel clears the surround and can be reached with wet hands without leaning. In a cloakroom the return wall next to the basin is usually the only sensible spot, and it's worth checking the towel doesn't hang over the radiator or the light switch before you mark it.

Finishes

A towel ring sits at eye level right beside the tap, so this is one of the accessories where a mismatched finish is most prominent. It's best to match it to the basin tap for a cohesive look.
