Choice of the style

When the kitchen is of complex shape and small size, it is recommended to choose modern styles with the simple laconic silhouettes and surfaces for its interior, without the excessive decorations. Contemporary, high-tech, suprematism are the trends, which would be the best choice in the narrow kitchen in all respects.

Classicism or the traditional English style, as well as the country or eclecticism should be avoided here, as they are demanding on the area of the room, selection of colors and natural textures and abundant decor, and it may be inappropriate decision for narrow rooms.

Choosing the furniture and placing it right

Having glanced over the room, you need to assess its capabilities for placement of furniture, since, in one case (if the kitchen is narrow, but long enough), everything you need can be installed, and even a showcase to demonstrate the dishes, while in another one it would be better to use only the furniture, without which you cannot do.

It is better to arrange the floor and wall cupboards, the main items of the kitchen set, near one of the long walls, when:

  1. The room is so narrow that the space between the furniture, arranged in parallel, would be hardly enough even for one person to turn around. By placing all the cupboards along one wall, you will have the opportunity to put a small table for breakfast and a couple of chairs near the opposite one, and also you will feel more freely.
  2. The kitchen is long, so all the furniture and equipment can easily fit along one wall. In some cases, there is an opportunity to put a fully-featured dining table in front of the cupboards.

Angular placement of the furniture is also justified and very convenient in the narrow and small kitchens. When installing cupboards along the adjacent walls, you may free the opposite space, using there, for example, a lounge suite with a compact table.

The narrow kitchens are quite often characterized by the window, located "in the end" of the room (in one of the short walls), making the room look like a tunnel. All the intricacies of lighting in such a case will be discussed later, but now we recommend making the dining room out of the area near the window.

If you put a table by the window, you may not worry about how to arrange the kitchen furniture, as the best option would be a parallel arrangement, the so-called "balancing" of the sides of the room. All the appliances can be placed against one wall, and the cupboards with working and cooking surfaces against the other one.

Determining the color gamma

The first thing you need to decide when choosing the palette for a narrow kitchen is a refusal of flashy bright colors, heavy dark combinations and warm colors.

Remember: you need to apply cold light colors on the surfaces of the walls or furniture (pale blue, pale cornflower blue, silver, pastel mint) to expand the visual boundaries of the room. On the contrary, bright warm colors (like peach, cream, pale coral, pale yellow) can bring it closer.

Large quantities of white are good for the narrow kitchen, but the room, that is painted white from the ceiling to the floor, can create a sense of disorientation and instability for someone. To avoid this, we recommend diluting a solid white color by a couple of others, for example, sandy color for the floor and blue for a kitchen panel, or chocolate and mint, respectively.

It is not recommended to use dark colors at eye level in the narrow kitchen, and ideally in the entire upper part of the room. This can lead to the fast fatigue, because the room will seem even more cramped and gloomy.

You can choose darker colors for the bottom row of the kitchen cupboards (blue, chocolate, malachite), and it will be better to make the upper level as light as possible (white, cream, light silver).

Lively, fairly bright color of the furniture in the narrow kitchen, like in the photo below, can be used very active, if it refers to the cool shades and, moreover, is supplemented by plenty of white: there's nothing to overweight the view.

The fans of deep dark colors are recommended to consider that their favorite shades can be relevant in the narrow kitchen only in two cases:

  • there is one or two large windows, and the kitchen has a southern exposure;
  • floor and ceiling are very bright-colored, that can visually broaden the wall with the dark furniture.

In the rest of the cases, there is one rule: the use of dark blue, chocolate, black, blueberry or plum shades in the narrow kitchen is tabooed.

Releasing the upper part of the walls

A need to impose the visual lightness of the space is one of the main objectives in design of the narrow kitchen. We have already talked about the role of the light shades, now we recommend minimizing the amount of the furniture in the top row of cupboards, leaving one or two with the glazed doors.

By refusing to use not so necessary but simply familiar pieces of furniture, hung at the top of the walls, you can feel the difference when a narrow room will be transformed into a more spacious one.

It will be possible to decorate a room with an interesting picture or collage, as well as to use the neat shelves, if some of the dishes are still needed to be close to the working surfaces.

Adding the light

The lack of lighting is able to acquire a fairly clear outline and even ruin the mood, if we speak about the narrow kitchen. Here you can fully feel all the negative consequences of the decision to save money on the installation of additional light sources: the kitchen will always seem darker and even narrower than it actually is; eyes and back will be constantly tense, and a desire to leave the premise as soon as possible will be only strengthened.

Pay the due attention to the issue of artificial lighting, because even if the room has a large window which somewhat saves the situation, the need for additional light may occur even in the daytime, not to mention the evening hours.

Apart from the main light, you cannot do without lighting of working surfaces in the narrow kitchen. It should be mounted around the perimeter of the lower edge of the upper cabinets of the kitchen furniture, or you may simply attach a few neat sconces with the shades of closed type, which will disperse the light gently.

We do not recommend installing the backlight near the glass, mirrored or glossy surfaces. Most likely, there will be an inverse and extremely undesirable effect of glare that would blind your eyes.

In the narrow kitchen with high ceilings you need to use hanging lamps, lowered as low as possible, especially if the furniture is equipped with the two levels of the cabinets. The case when the chandelier is mounted high on the ceiling creates the impression of presence in the well, which remains darkened at a depth.

Making the space visually wider

The narrow kitchen, which is decorated by the glossy smooth surfaces, is always perceived as much lighter and roomier. You may slightly erase the existing boundaries of the narrow room due to the horizontal surfaces, for example, in the form of a glass panel, mirrored mosaic panel or a smooth metallic one.

You can successfully expand the boundaries of the walls in the narrow kitchen with the help of the glass panels with photo printing, portraying some landscapes with the linear or aerial perspective.

Volumetric images can be used in decoration of the walls: grape fields, lake, escaping afar, or a city panorama will make the narrow kitchen beautiful and more spacious.

Techniques that may help to improve a modest space:

  1. Diagonal laying of the flooring.
  2. The fittings, which are laconic or fully recessed into the doors of the kitchen furniture.
  3. Transformers chairs, transparent tables and chairs.
  4. Single-color mosaic on the floor and walls.
  5. "Trick of the eye" geometric patterns on small areas of the parallel walls.
