In any bathroom, whether we want it or not, process of moisture evaporation takes place while we are taking a bath, then the moisture settles on the surfaces becoming an ideal environment for growth of different bacteria, fungus and mould. This affects wall and ceiling finish boosting pathogen environment dangerous for inhabitants. To keep fungus and mould away from your bathroom it is important to remove moisture from it. In this article we will tell you how to do it.

During redecoration of the bathroom use special means with antiseptic agents which will prevent bacteria from generating. Do not forget about moisture proofing of good quality, which is laid under the tiles.

Methods of moisture removal from the bathroom

Setting a ventilation system

This is a safe and proven method to eliminate moisture in the room, as a standard draft of a ventilation shaft very often is not enough. First of all, check that ventilation shaft is clean and nothing prevents air from circulating. Then, using a match or a lighter define draft degree in the following way: bring fire to ventilation bars and see how far the crest of flame goes towards them. If it bends strongly everything is all right and your ventilation system will deal with moisture fine, if it bends just a little – the draft is very small.

Since bathroom ventilator has to be switched into utility line (often it is connected to light switcher) it must be done by a professional as moisture of the bathroom and electric power together make a high risk area for life. After you have installed ventilator watch for a while how efficient is moisture removal from your bathroom.

Bathroom window and crack under the door

These measures may be both separate actions and supplementary to the main ventilation. Practical function of the window, apart from aesthetic decorative one, is airing the bathroom, letting fresh air in. Crack under the door allows constant pulling moisture and air out of the bathroom. Even if your ventilation shaft is completely clogged all you will need to do is open the closest window and airflow will circulate through the cracks.

Airing

Remember to leave the door to the bathroom open regularly after showering or bathing. It will help to get rid of moisture and kill pathogenic microflora, especially if next to the bathroom there is large and light room full of sunlight that will destroy bacteria and fungi.

3

No drying washing in the bathroom

As you understand, additional sources of moisture will only worsen the situation. Either dry your washing on special drying racks or organise system of drying racks on the balcony or in housekeeping area. It is useful both for air in the bathroom and washing itself as washed items will not start rotting.

Setting towel dryer

Towel dryer is evidently useful as it dries, warms the room up and at the same time eliminates moisture from the air. Size of a heater depends on your needs and room area. Please, note, the larger the bathroom, the bigger heater you need. There are two types of heaters: water and electric ones. The first ones do not demand additional expenses on power, as they get warm whenever central heating is switched or if there is hot water in the house; the latter work only on electric power. Do not be afraid of it overdrying the air, as the heating temperature is adjustable.

The main idea is to keep vigilance and do the checks regularly watching ceiling and walls for the signs of mould.
