Most of us are familiar with the towel dryers not hearsay: they are present in many bathrooms and have a snake-like appearance. Their functions are reduced to being a clothes and towels dryer, because things dry very slowly in such a humid environment like bath. In addition, the towel dryer is also a heating element, which is able to improve the micro climate, and getting out of the hot bath or the shower can be comfortable without being covered with goosebumps. An additional bonus is the prevention of the condensation forming on the mirror and other surfaces, which is also important. Such an element is becoming a necessity in the modern bathroom. How to choose the correct towel dryer that will fit the most parameters of this room? What to pay attention to and which manufacturers can be trusted?

Water and electric towel dryers are widely distributed now, and each of them has its undeniable advantages and disadvantages. It is impossible to identify which of them is better, as it is necessary to proceed from the prevailing conditions when choosing.

Water towel dryers

That's the easiest and the most popular option that is usually included into the standard equipment of a bathroom in the apartment buildings. Such a towel dryer reminds a curved tube through which the hot water circulates, coming from the hot water supply system of the house. The benefits of this option include the ease of use, durability, low price of the device, as well as the absence of additional fees during the operation.

However, the water towel dryer also has some drawbacks. The key one is the dependence on the hot water supply: if repair takes place, or water supply is just turned off, then the bathroom will be cold and damp. If we are talking about a private house, which uses autonomous heating and hot water sources, you can choose the water heated towel dryer without hesitation. It is also worth mentioning that it warms up quite slowly, and it will take time from switching on the hot water to the moment when the bathroom will be warm. But even in spite of these drawbacks, the water towel dryers are still the most popular option now.

Taking into account the unstable pressure in the water supply systems of apartment buildings, before the purchase of a water towel dryer you should first of all pay attention to operating and maximum pressure, for which it is designed, and then compare this figure with the pressure in a specific building network. The rules regulate that all the elements of the water supply network at building must withstand a pressure of 6 atmospheres, normally deal with hydrostatic testing, when the pressure may rise up to 10 atmospheres for a couple of times a year to check it. At the same time, according to the standards, the operating pressure of the heat medium is 4 atmospheres. However, as many have already managed to make on their own experience, the figures do not always correspond to the certified standards. Thus, depending on the season, building, number of floors and condition of communications, there can be the pressure of either 2.5 or even 7.5 atmospheres as well. That is why the probability of water hammers and pressure increase should be taken into account when choosing a towel dryer. It's a different matter, if you live in a private house, where the pressure in the internal system never actually exceeds 2-3 atmospheres. In this case, the choice of different options of the towel dryers expands largely.

Electric towel dryers

A great alternative to the water towel dryers are their electrical alternatives. This option is ideal when the shortages of hot water occur regularly, and you do not want to depend on its presence in pipes, pressure, qualitative composition, etc. Electrical devices often have a nice design, they are portable and independent, and they do not require connection to the water supply network. To start using this device, simply mount it on the wall and connect to a power outlet. That is why they can be used not only in the bathroom, but also in the kitchen or hallway, for example.

Electric towel dryers are much easier to handle, since almost all models are equipped with a control system: you can set any required temperature, and adjust it in the process. It is also the only option to perform the installation of the towel dryer without destroying the existing water supply system, if such an element was not designed in advance. You will not face problems with bad water and corrosion of material, which can also be considered as a significant advantage.

These models also have some disadvantages, and the main of them is an increase in electricity charges. In addition, you will need to take care of safety, because the electrical appliance will always stay in such a humid environment like the bathroom. It is better to provide a splash protection for the outlets and think in advance how to arrange the cord so that it does not get underfoot and not really spoil the interior of the bathroom.

When choosing an electric towel dryer, you should pay special attention not only to its shape and size, but also to its power consumption and presence of the temperature controller. Naturally, the more economical is a towel dryer, the better it is for the family budget. As for the control, there may be two options. The first of them is as simple as possible: there is the thermostatic head that allows manual regulation of the temperature regime. The second option has a higher cost and advanced functionality. The user only has to indicate a comfortable temperature in the room, and a towel dryer will maintain it. Some devices are additionally equipped with a timer, by means of which a special mode can be set for a day or a week. Such functionality not only ensures more efficient use of energy, but also makes your life more comfortable. For example, a timer can be set up so that by the time you come home or wake up from sleep, the towels and bathrobes will be warm.

Combined towel dryers

As you might guess from the name, combined towel dryers are a compromise option and can receive the heat from both the hot water and from electricity. Recently, these devices are becoming more popular, although they are still produced in small amounts.

Combined towel dryers unite the advantages of both types of devices, and the reliability of the design will only increase in the end. This option is indispensable in the case where the hot water is shut off in summer: in this case, you can save in the winter and use the device as the water heated towel dryer, turn it on in the summer, when appropriate, and to set the desired mode by using the electricity.

The only drawback of such a solution is a high price, which discourages many potential buyers.

If your choice fell on the water towel dryer, then you should look very carefully at the material of manufacture. The main danger in this case is the water in the central water supply system, which often does not meet the standards, and is saturated with oxygen, salts, and eventually leads to the development of corrosion processes, clogging, that gradually damage the towel dryer. So, what kind of material is the most robust and durable?

  • The best option is a stainless steel towel dryer, which can be used in almost all bathrooms. It can be painted, chromed or polished. The paint coating is the cheapest, but short-lived variant, and the chrome coating will fit the modern style bathrooms much more successfully.
  • Towel dryer made of black steel often resembles steel models externally, and its interior surface has a corrosion-resist coating, designed to be a sufficient protection. Nevertheless, these devices are better used in private houses with individual heating, because these towel dryers are more susceptible to corrosion. These models are designed for systems with consistently high quality of the heat medium, so if they are not, you will have to choose another option then, or to use special adapters.
  • Models made of non-ferrous metals (copper is most commonly used) are distinguished by a sophisticated appearance and a high price. But such towel dryer will serve faithfully for many years, decorating any bathroom as well.

These are the most popular and most represented types of towel dryers, though there can also be the stone and even glass products found in the elite collections of some foreign manufacturers.

Towel dryer's power plays an important role: correctly chosen device will be fully coping with all tasks assigned to it. You should build your choice on the dimensions of the bathroom, as well as on the towel dryer's functions, imposed on him.  For example, if the task is simply to dry linen and towels, the power at the rate of 100 W/m2 or 40 W/m3 will be enough.

If you want the towel dryer to perform even the role of the heater, it is best to use the other standards during the calculation: 140 W/m2 or 56 W/m3. Thus, for example, the towel dryer with a power of 490 W will be enough for the bathroom with an area of 3.5 m2.

Taking into account all the aspects of functionality and reliability, do not forget about the aesthetic component. It is important for the towel dryer to fit the bathroom in size, not to interfere with the free movement, to fit the interior. In addition, you should also choose a model that would be the most convenient for you, because the number of bends and bars may be different. Furthermore, the device shape can be bizarre and unusual to such an extent, that it will be not only convenient, but also a beautiful addition to the bathroom.

If there was no towel dryer in the bathroom at first, then it is possible to choose any form and structure. But those, who have got bathrooms with the old M or U-shaped towel dryer, should have a good think about whether to change it or not, and to what kind. The towel dryer in apartment buildings also performs the function of a buffer loop. The fact is that the whole system of water pipes in the building is combined, and according to the laws of physics, the tube can elongate slightly when the temperature increases, and shorten when it decreases. If we imagine the whole process throughout the building, it makes something like an accordion, in which the key role belongs to the towel dryers, and the risk of accidents during temperature changes decreases greatly thanks to them. It is not difficult to imagine what will happen if something would be radically changed in the bathroom, so it's best to try to select such a towel dryer that will fit the place of the old and boring one in the best way.

As regards the form, the simplest M- and U-shaped towel dryers are still the most popular today. There are also the snakelike options with many bends. Another popular option is the “ladders”, which are distinguished by their benefits. Many people call this option more convenient and practical, because you can place more things on the "ladder", and they can be dried throughout the length.

The snakelike towel dryer also has its advantages: it is twice cheaper and easier to install, if the apartment has previously been equipped with such a device, then you don't need to adapt a standpipe to new model.

But the various options of the towel dryer design do not end there, because there are so-called design radiators, which can actually be a stylish decoration of the room. Such interesting models are presented mainly in range of the foreign manufacturers: it can be the towel dryers rotating through a full 180°, perforated models with rounded holes, and the other most unimaginable variations.
