A comfortable and beautiful mixer tap is an important part of any kitchen interior.

Bathroom and kitchen mixer taps have a lot in common. This includes their purposes and control strategies, manufacturing material, internal parts. But every set has its own secrets and additional functions.

A two way S-type mixer tap looks stylish, especially in classical interiors

There are one way, two way and touchless mixer taps. Two way mixer taps are conventional devices with two handles (with hot and cold water). They are chosen by people who prefer classical interior or retro style kitchens.

One way mixer taps are the taps with one handle. They are preferred by 80% of consumers, because such taps can be turned on with one movement, and you can adjust the necessary temperature very quickly, change water intensity with a little finger of your hand. One way taps are more water-saving, because it will take more time to adjust a conventional tap, thus water consumption will increase.

It takes no effort at all to turn on a touchless tap. Water flows in response to the presence of your hands or the dishes. Basically, automatic devices have taken comparatively a modest niche in the market of commodities so far, because of high price and limited model range. A lot of brands have combined constructions – half automatic-half mechanic taps. They can be controlled both automatically and with the help of a handle at your option. The advantages of such a design are obvious but the price is high, respectively. Not every family can afford to buy such a tap.

The main distinctive feature of kitchen taps is the form and the size of the stream. These features are important in the view of aesthetics and ergonomics. The stream of a kitchen tap should get precisely in the centre of the sink; otherwise it will be inconvenient to do the washing up. A kitchen tap spout can be short, long and very long. The higher is the water outlet, the more splashes it will make, and the more is its intensity. If a water outlet is short, it is not convenient to wash large dishes. You cannot put a lot of dishes in a sink with such a device. Of course, an owner won’t like to pile some part of dirty dishes on the table beside the sink until she/he can empty the sink. Consequently, there is a direct relation between the height of the spout and the depth of the sink. The shorter is the water outlet, the deeper should be the sink. Are you afraid of making a mistake? Pay attention to producers who take an integrated approach to this problem and produce product lines comprising a set of a sink, a faucet and respective accessories.

It is considered, that the bigger is the rotation angle of a tap, the more convenient a kitchen tap is. Models at a lower price have a rotation angle from 120 to 140 degrees. More expensive devices have a rotation angle of 180 degrees, and “cool” taps can rotate around their axes. This would be appropriate if you wanted to order an island kitchen and put the sink in the island. If it is based near the wall or in the corner, there is no need to have a tap with 180 degree rotation angle.

If you want to install not only a sink with a tap, but also equip your kitchen with a real washing up centre with two or three sinks, pay your attention to kitchen taps with a spray hose. They are equipped with an additional hose, which can be pulled out at the distance of  1,97 to 3.94 ft (Damixa,  Jupiter moel; Sas, Stylewith model)

Such taps are very convenient if you need to fill a big saucepan or a bucket with water. A spray hose allows doing it beyond the sink. A spray hose is made of rubber of high quality and protected with armor from textile fabrics and metal. Expensive tap models are equipped not with a rubber hose but with a hose made of special polymeric material PEX. These are the hoses of the highest quality, they are durable, and the main thing is that they are hygienic as there is a special covering inside them, which prohibits of bacterial growth.

There are two types of spouts in such appliances.  The simple model is a water spout with an aerator at the end. An advanced faucet with a hose ends with a showerhead, which has two modes –shower mode and aerated stream mode. The spray hose is aimed to wash delicate fruit, berries, greens, and to rinse the dishes and the sink. It is fixed at the necessary height using a switch button at the showerhead, which is connected with special lead weights and a return spring. It is needed to put some efforts to pull out the showerhead but you don’t need to hold it on. A spray hose with a return spring is easy to take out, but you need to hold the button all the time so that the hose won’t go back. Consequently, when you work with a spray hose, one hand will be constantly in use.

A mixer tap with a spray hose allows you to wash large and complex-shaped dishes

Cottage owners would like to install a sink in front of the window. But they don’t place it there, because a tap will prevent them from opening the window sash. Now the problem has beeb solved. Tap models with a bayonet fastening come to aid. The body of the tap is just taken out of the base and put on the table top. There can be another problem solution. You can buy a tap which spout not only rotates around it axis but also can be folded onto the sink (a rotation around a horizontal axis). Of course, such appliances are more expensive than usual ones, but they allow you to have the kitchen design which owners want.

There are taps with a built-in switch for a dishwashing machine and a laundry washer, a steam cooker and a coffee machine ( e.g., “Saphira classica” tap by Oras.) This function allows to avoid additional pipe installation for technical appliances and prevents from accidental flood. You can turn off water supply to technical appliances with one movement. There is a special flag-switch on the tap body. It turns out that having such a tap you don’t need to get under the sink to cut off water, and you can always control the position of a handle.

Some brands offer kitchen taps with built-in water filtration systems. Such taps have two spouts:  tap water for washing up flows from one spout, drinking water flows from another one. There are such taps which combine two streams of water in one spout, but unstrained water isn’t miscible with drinking water.

How is water filtered in a kitchen tap? Most of the appliances are equipped with a double clean-up system of a very high quality. At first, water goes through a membrane clears from precipitate, lime and other harmful impurities. Then it goes through charcoal filter, which absorbs chloride and organic substances, which worsen the taste of water and its smell. Such models of taps are equipped with LCD displays. They inform you about the need to change the filter.

A collapsible tap has its own advantages, one of which is a simple change of damaged parts.

From the technological perspective there are collapsible and cast mixer taps. Cast taps are designed in such a way that the spout and the body are connected seamlessly. The construction has a rotating spout and is installed with the help of a special metal foundation (for example, a tap Agat or Vidima). An integral construction in cast combination taps is designed from a few parts. Experts consider a cast spout to be more practical as it doesn’t have extra seams. But if a collapsible tap is assembled fairly and precisely, its hermeticity is kept. Besides, due to design from separate parts it is easier to control a water stream (a tap Arc made by Damixa). Tap design is limited only by customer’s imagination. Models offered by modern producers are so diverse, that number of models exceeds even the most ambitious expectations. We can choose a tap to fit into any style.

There are kitchen faucets with different spout heights on offer:

  • short (e.g.,, a faucet Balocchi by Fantini). Spout height is  2.41 и 1.26 inches;
  • medium – 3.10 inches (Grohe, Eurostyle model), 3.35 inches, 3.41 inches, 3.64 inches («Tarner» tap by Vidima);
  • long – 9.45 inches (Eurostyle tAP by Grohe) and 11.023 inches («Seva М» by Vidima).

Taps can differ according to their spout forms as well. They can be:

  • S-shaped ( «Vit» tap by Vidima);
  • L-shaped- (Venus fatapt by  Damixa);
  • С-shaped (Stylewith tap by Sas, Arc faucet by Damixa);
  • J-shaped (Allegra Sportive tap by Hansgrohe);
  • R-shaped ( tap Tarner by Vidima);

A tapby Grohe is notable not only for its attractive design, but also for its excellent quality

Is it possible to evaluate the quality of a tap by sight and make the right choice? Yes, it is,  you buy them in a specialized store focusing on a brand and a price. A number of people will disagree: why overpay for the brand? But cost of taps will pay off due to their durability and user-friendliness. Most of producers offer upmarket and middle-market products and cheap models – basic models. Their price is lower due to simplified covering and design but it doesn’t affect the quality of a product.

Price is influenced by many factors: if there is a spray hose, a valve connecting to other appliances and a water filter system, and a tap design. Market leaders are the following companies: Damixa (Denmark), Reginox (the Netherlands), Axor, Blanco, Dornbracht, Franke, Grohe, Hansa, Hansgrohe, IdealStandard, Kludi, Schock (Germany), Oras (Finnland), Roca (Spain), JacobDelafon (France), Elleci, Piados, Webert, Zucchetti (Italy) etc.

Regardless of the determinants of choosing a tap (design, functionality, or their reasonable combination) it should fit into sink design and shape, be placed properly, leave enough space to wash large dishes and to fill it in with water. It shouldn’t’t hinder, but help you in your creative cooking process!
