Bathroom lighting will perform not only its primary function, but also a few others in case of a competent approach. Luminaires can decorate the interior and visually expand even a small room. However, you have to be extremely careful in selection, as the combination of electricity and water in the bathroom requires the observance of safety regulations. We suggest you to take a close look at few useful tips for lighting the bathroom.

The number of lighting fixtures in the bathroom depends directly on its area. If the room is very tiny, and its area is about 5 m2, then a chandelier with two or three lights in the center of the ceiling will be sufficient. But even if the bathroom is small, it's better to illuminate a zone of washbasin and mirror additionally, so all cosmetic procedures can be carried out much easier.

If the bathroom is spacious enough, it is necessary to provide the area lightning, the features of which will depend on the configuration of the room, designer's ideas and some other factors.

It is important to take into account a lot of other factors that affect the luminance of the bathroom. These include:

  • interior style, or rather the selected color scheme, because, as is known, the light shades reflect light fluxes better, hence, the room will seem more illuminated. The same can be said about the glossy, mirrored and glass surfaces;
  • the height at which the luminaires will be installed, because the closer they are to the person, the brighter light they give;
  • the type of luminaires.

It is better to decide on the quantity and location of lighting fixtures arrangement already at the stage of repair to avoid any unnecessary troubles and expenses in future.

The choice of lighting fixtures is so vast today, that everyone can choose the option that is the most appropriate to his wishes. So, the luminaires, depending on the type of the surface location, can be:

  • open;
  • built-in. This option is preferable for tiny bathrooms with not very high ceilings.

Luminaires, depending on the location, can be:

  • ceiling mounted. That is an unchanging classic. Every bathroom should be equipped with at least one luminary, which will be responsible for the overall light in the room;
  • wall-mounted. These are the luminaires which are designed to highlight specific functional areas of the room;
  • floor luminaires perform rather a decorative function, they are able to make a highlight in the interior space by expanding the space of the room visually.

Each of the luminaries used can perform one or several of these functions:

  • work lightning;
  • decorative lightning;
  • localized lightning;
  • general lightning.

Today, the different types of lamps may be used as light sources:

  • incandescent lamps;
  • halogen lamps;
  • fluorescent lamps;
  • LED lamps.

Everyone may choose the type of lamps by himself, depending on the type of luminary or own desire to save, but special attention should be paid to the LED luminaires. They are considered as the most cost effective and safe, as they do not heat up while being turned on. LED strip, which adds a real highlight to the interior of the bathroom, is also often used. The only drawback of LED lamps is their high price.

Experts advise to approach the choice of the lighting fixtures location in the bathroom carefully. Experience suggests that it is necessary to take some of the details into account, including the following:

  • the lighting itself should be uniform, so you must always take the following rule into account. The more light sources are in the room, the lower should be their power;
  • the light should be properly distributed and the luminaires should be located in all functional areas of the bathroom;
  • it is important to avoid glares, and in order to do that, you should not direct the luminaries perpendicularly to the reflective surfaces: it is better if they are arranged at an angle;
  • a common mistake is to place the luminary directly above the mirror. The reflection will often be slightly distorted in this case. It is better to use mirror lightning on the sides, or at the top and on the sides;
  • a highlight in the interior may be made thanks to the color spots: colored ceiling lights, original insertions of the ceramic tiles. However, it's better not to place such details in the area of mirror in order not to distort the reflection;
  • the fans of unconventional ideas can be advised to experiment with the location of the LED strip: it can be placed under the edges of the bath, under the windowsill, etc.;
  • it's better to connect the various luminaires in the bathroom by separate lines, because you won't need to turn all the lights on at once every time.

As it was already stated, you can't do with one light source even in the smallest bathroom. General lighting function is usually performed by the ceiling lights, which are a must in the bathroom. Thus, it is better to choose a chandelier for a conventional ceiling and a couple of built-in luminaires can be used for the suspended ceiling. You should also take into account the height of the room and not to place the long chandeliers in low rooms. A great option is a spotlight luminary, the direction of light of which can be adjusted to obtain sufficient level of lighting in any zone f the room.

The shape, design and color of the lighting fixtures can be very different, and the choice here should be based on the personal preferences, the design of the room, and, of course, you should not forget about functionality.

If your bathroom is quite spacious, then it is necessary to highlight some areas with the separate lightning:

  • washing-up area, where, naturally, a washbasin and a mirror should be located;
  • bathing area with a bath or a shower cabin;
  • spare area for changing clothes, folding things or washing.

In addition, you can illuminate the items of furniture as well: shelves, cupboards, small cabinets may be equipped with the small built-in luminaires that provide a soft non-intrusive light, able to cover all the contents of the cabinet and to simplify the search for the required item.

The mirror is necessary to illuminate so that its reflection could be maximally natural, without the unnecessary shadows and distorted colors. In this case it is better not to use the luminaires under the mirror, as well as the colored lighting, which will create the unnecessary color spots on your image. It would be better if the light is maximally soft, so the ceiling lamps can be matted or white. The best option is the location of light sources on the sides or on the perimeter of the mirror. You can use absolutely any kind of lamps, but it will be better if the resulting light appears to be maximally close to the natural daylight.

Bathroom lighting is not a must; it rather performs the decorative function by creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Thus, it is possible to find a few luminaires in the shower, to hang a few sconces above the bath or even organize bottom lighting in it. It is common knowledge that taking a bath is more a way of relaxation, than a hygienic procedure, and the appropriate lighting is able to make such a rest even more comfortable.

For sufficiently spacious bathrooms with some interesting architectural details, you can use the lighting, which does not have any direct functions, but is intended only to decorate interiors and to create a unique atmosphere. You can illuminate anything you want: steps, niches, windows and other elements of the room. Today, there is even the tile, equipped with the LED lamps.

A deck light should be mentioned separately: robust luminaires, such as for garden paths, are often used to create it, thus, their power should be no more than 5 W. With their help you can create a unique interior and broaden the visual boundaries of the bathroom.

The combination of electricity and humidity is able to increase the risk of the unforeseen situations that might be dangerous. That is why you need to follow the certain rules during the choice, installing and using the lighting fixtures in the bathroom:

  • to develop a correct scheme of the bathroom lighting (this task can be entrusted to the professionals);
  • you must use only those luminaires that perfectly endure the exposure of moisture;
  • metal parts of luminaires must be protected from the exposure of corrosion;
  • lightning fixtures in the bath and shower cabin should have a power of not more than 12 W;
  • lighting sconces should not be placed immediately above the bath;
  • there should be minimal risk of water contact with the wall or ceiling lighting fixtures. Open incandescent lamps do not fit the bathroom at all, as the lamp may even explode in case of contact of the heated glass with the water drops and shards of glass may break way across the room;
  • open wiring, extension cords, tee-joints don't fit the bathroom.

Bathroom lighting is the part that performs several functions, and therefore the approach to organization of lighting requires taking into account variety of factors: the type and capacity of lightning fixtures, their location, safety, design, etc. At the same time it is important not to forget about the safety both at the stage of the repair, and in the future. Mind that you can create not only a convenient, but also a cozy space due to the proper lightning.
